WILL HONEY BEES BE THE NEXT ANIMAL EXPLOSIVE DETECTORS?
Honey Bees antennas are equipped with special scent detector called “odorant receptors”, these allow the Honey Bees to successfully forage and communicate messages to other Honey Bees.
Scientists have discovered that they may be able to use the Honey Bees exceptional sense of smell to seek out explosives hidden by terrorists. A group of Scientists are conducting experiments with “a box device containing three trained bees built into a removable drawer”. The bees responses are recorded via a video camera, which has shown that the bees have reacted to even the smallest traces of explosive. The research has indicated that bees are able to "detect the scent of explosives at concentrations as low as two parts per trillion, which is the equivalent of finding a grain of sand in a swimming pool".
